How To Make a Handmade Sewn Face Mask in 12 Easy Steps - a Picture Tutorial - March 29, 2020

A couple of days ago, I posted a picture on social media of a few handmade masks that I made to give to a nurse friend.  Subsequently, I received many requests for a full basic picture tutorial from  my friends and family in the USA as well as abroad. People who wanted a basic step by step picture tutorial so that they can make them by scrolling through pictures  vs. having to start and stop a video tutorial.

This tutorial is for people who already know how to use a sewing machine and have basic sewing skills.  For others who want  more detailed instructions, there are some wonderful videos on the internet to supplement this tutorial.  I claim no right to this pattern as I have borrowed and combined from a few different, open source tutorials made and shared by other makers to help in this time of need. I have incorporated the addition of the dart in the last step to make it fit better over the face.  Please feel free to share this with anyone who would want to make this version of the mask.

These masks are made out of 3 layers of 100 % Quilting Cotton Fabric.  They can be washed in hot water, soap and bleach to be reused. I don't want to claim or in any manner give anyone the impression that these masks are medical grade. I always insert the following note as I mail or hand over the masks to the recipients.  I suggest you do the same.

"Please understand, that my intention is to make masks for healthcare workers, to supplement their dwindling supplies of protective equipment. They can be worn over an N-95 mask or under a face shield. As stockpiles of medical masks dwindle, washable/reusable masks can help. Cloth masks are not going to protect against Novel Corona Virus outbreak. Social distancing is key to arresting the spread of Novel Corona Virus. Stay home as much as you possibly can. In the event you have to go out in public to shop for essentials, emergency, etc please wear a mask for basic protection while at the same time maintaining a 6 to 8 feet distance from other people while outdoors as well as, follow all CDC guidelines. I urge the recipients of these masks to wash in hot water and soap before using them.  Stay healthy & safe!"
